The prisoners in this mostly Kurdish southeast city of Turkey experienced one of the most darkest and barbaric episodes of humanity. The crimes committed against the prisoners in the Diyarbakır Military Prison during the military junta of September 12, 1980 will finally be investigated. The investigation aims to prosecute the torturers and other officials who participated in the inhuman treatment of prisoners and to expose their identities. A commission tasked to investigate the crimes and to expose the purpotrators called ‘Commission to Investigate the Reality of Diyarbakır Prison’ was formed and will be announced today with a press conference. The press release will be attended by many academicians and famous names. The initiative to form such a comission came from the 78’s Generation Association whose spokesperson Celalettin Can said during the 1980-84 years the crimes committed inside the prison were not only crimes against human rights but were actually crimes against humanity. He said the criminals “Tried to destroy the most intellectuals and those who promised the most for the future among the Kurds.” Commission of Reality for Crimes Against Humanity The case of Diyarbakır Military Prison, considered to be the turning point, the social breakdown and the most important milestone for Turkey during the September 12 military rule of 1980 will finally be investigated. The press release will be held in front of the famed Turkish military prison. The announcement will emphasize that after 1969 an enlightenment project took over in the Kurdish geography and those who led this enlightenment were taken to this prison with the aim of destroying them and their ideas. Spokesmen said, “Let us not look for ‘foreign’ forces behind PKK (Workers Party of Kurdistan). If we want to find a special force behind this organization we should look at the barbarism that occurred in the Diyarbakır Military Prison. The military tanks rolled over Turkey once on September 12, 1980 military coup, but those tanks rolled over Diyarbakır twice. The prison conditions changed both the context and the quality of the Kurdish issue. We need to face this fact. If we fail to grasp this we will not understand why there is no peace. In order for the Kurds and the Turks to understand each other this reconciliation must take place. For this reason, the investigation of the Diyarbakır Military Prison will be an important milestone on the way to peace." Spokesperson Celalettin Can said the investigation has been lacking for more than 27 years. He continued, “We want to know what happened to us, who did what to us. We will bring the events and experiences of that prison to the public eye and create the ultimate conscience and awareness.” He also added that the day the press release will take place, the very tanks that created this barbarism will also be present in front of the ill famed prison. The Prison was managed like a Nazi camp Unbelievable suffering, torture and oppression had taken place in the prison during the Turkish Military rule. The political prisoners were stripped naked and attack dogs had been set loose on them. Many were left to hunger and deprivation. According to the Turkish military 53 prisoners died in the prison. 14 prisoners hanged or set fire to themselves. 7 prisoners lost their lives in their hunger strike. And 7 were murdered during torture. Source: Gündem/Cengiz Kapmaz M.B. |
