Public sector unions continued to be a target of government interference. Individual members faced fines and disciplinary action. In the private sector workers faced anti-union harassment, including dismissals, while strikers faced police violence and arrest. Two union leaders were imprisoned for 40 days. There has been virtually no progress on bringing the law into line with international labour standards.

Trade union rights in law

No real progress has been made in bringing the country's legislation on workers' and trade union rights into line with international standards. The changes are in draft form only, in contrast to other areas of law that have been changed with a view to Turkey's accession to the European Union.

The agenda for the left shows some changes when compared to pre-election days. With the exception of two, the entire legal and illegal left participated in the elections. The resulting failure forced these parties to an internal evaluation while still keeping a stiff upper lip to the external world. Running independent candidates partially achieved the desired “goal” with the election of Ufuk Uras (12). The vacuum left by social democracy and the left pulled the CHP to an opposite, right wing, position than its traditional social democratic trend. Although it is not suitable for the task, the Kurdish DTP (13) party claimed it was the umbrella organization for the left. Looking at the “welfare” methods used and the resulting victory of the governing AKP, some left organization too started to shift towards help campaigns to the people.

The class character of the September 12 military coup (which also included Özal’s contributions) was revealed in the first appearance of General Evren, the head of the military coup, on his TV and radio announcement of the military takeover. In his initial statement Evren targeted the trade union movement and compared his salary with that of a waiter. The "deception" of the previous March 12 junta was no longer on the agenda.


Of course the traditional gender roles continue as they were before. It is not easy to eliminate the relationship between the oppressed and the oppressor that goes back centuries. A women who can go out or work can not be the same as before especially if she has now also lived the experience of a strike. You know, they say, strike is a school. For many women here, it truly has become one.
You know, you can not oppress most of these girls easily any more.
